Music - COPYRIGHT FREE!!!

Just a reminder to students that music in your films MUST be original work or copyright free.

The exam specification states that: "All material should be original", All candidates are strongly encouraged to explore the variety of possibilities of sound design and not just to use music!

So you cannot use music that was used in a film or by a well known artists as these sounds are protected by copyright law.

EITHER - create (or get a musically-skilled friend to create) an original piece of music for the film specifically or

find a free download site.

A site with free downloads on http://www.soundjay.com/free-music.html could be useful (although it is fairly limited the choice) or http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/.

Both sites allow free downloads of music, but PLEASE do credit them in your film  closing credits and on your blog.

Ancillary Tasks - Film poster and film review

PPT from lesson at the bottom of this post.

In addition to your 5 minute short film, you are required to create the following:

  • A film poster
  • a page from a film magazine reviewing your film

These should be done individually and require research into conventions and analysis of similar existing products, planning/drafts as well as a finished product.

There should be clear link between your film and ancillary tasks.

Each production is worth 10 marks of your total project, and is also credited in the research and planning marks too,

DON'T LEAVE IT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!

EG from last year.

Scroll through this blog to see the progress of ideas and research for the ancillary tasks. http://charliechalkleya2media.blogspot.co.uk/2013_03_01_archive.html

Links to excellent blogs from last year

Look at these for inspiration on planning, presentation and development of ideas.

http://amygracemedia.blogspot.co.uk - excellent blog all round, especially good at varying presentational methods

http://meganmcguinessa2media.blogspot.co.uk/?m=1 - some good variety in presentation.

http://charliechalkleya2media.blogspot.co.uk - an excellent all round blog.

http://georgiasharp.blogspot.co.uk a good blog with some detailed analysis

http://harrinicholls.blogspot.co.uk another high level blog in terms of research, planning and presentation.

Planning tasks and presentation methods - getting the highest mark possible

Remember to keep your work presented in a variety of digital methods.

Forms, pictures, brainstorms, diagrams are all good ways to present planning and development of ideas.

Remember you get marked on:

- EXCELLENT use of digital technology and ICT in your work.
- Script
- Organisation of actors and crew
- Well planned and good organisation of locations, costumes and props
- Careful planning of shotlists and storyboard
- Time management (that means HITTING DEADLINES and being on track throughout!)

Below are some ways to present your planning and template forms to use.

Storyboard:

Best idea for storyboard is to use post-it notes. this allows for easy adjustment of order of scenes and to slot extra shots in. The example below is just for ONE scene - you will need detailed storyboard for each scene (6 frames for the whole this IS NOT excellent planning)

An excellent example of post-it story board

Organisation of actors
This can be done through Facebook chat, creating a group to share ideas, meeting times etc, evidence of text messages and emails.

These message can be displayed as well as producing Call sheets - given to actors each time they are needed - and a shooting schedule. Templates of these forms are available below for your to download.

Both the forms and the evidence of communication should be on your blog to get high marks for organising actors. These forms also partly cover organisation of props/costume.

Presenting initial ideas - brainstorms.

There are a number of ways this can be presented creatively.
Speeded up versions of the brainstorm look good,
as does using free websites such as https://bubbl.us and embedding the result (|this is just a picture of one, the actual results are far clearer)

Location planning and organisation:
Taking photographs of anywhere that may be suitable is a first step in selecting appropriate locations. however you also need to find out who owns the location and get (ideally written) permission to use it - either in email or other form.

Include these permissions on your blog as well as the vital photographs with comments on their suitability and contingency plans if they cannot be used.
This location scouting sheet will also help you achieve excellent marks for organising location. Once again, this is available for you to download.

Photos showing the location and possible placing for camera would also show good planning progress.

Alternatively, a plan of a room with camera positions and power supplies marked on would also show location planning (power supply notes   VERY    important!)

Costume plans
Clear design and plan of your costumes - with reasons why these are suitable for your characters are needed. Not just the 'special' parts (e.g. fedora hat/trenchcoat for the traditional noir) but the whole outfit. Consider how your character is being represented through their outfit.
